CCFP-EM Program

It is with much enthusiasm that I want to announce for those that may not know that there has been a changing of the guard for our program.

Dr. Christine Richardson has assumed the position of Program Director July 1 2010.  She has been an invaluable member of the squad, and our Division in the role of Assistant PD for the last few  years, and takes the reins with lots of great ideas.

Please welcome Dr Grant Coome as our new Assistant PD, also with vim and vigor, and I am so excited for our program.

If you have any promising young students or residents with questions, or to put them on our "radar", please let any of us know,

Thank you for the wonderful support you have given to the residents, myself and the enrichment of our CCFPEM program over the years. It is greatly appreciated.

The Emergency Department at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital (SMGH), located approximately 30 minutes west of London, is a medium-volume community emergency department seeing approximately 28,000 visits/annum. We are proud of our modern facilities and have access to many technologies such as CT, bedside ultrasound, video-laryngoscope, C-arm fluoroscopy, etc.

We see a wide patient spectrum and a nice mix of high acuity and medium acuity patients.  SMGH is a family medicine run full service community hospital with most consultant services found at larger hospitals including internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, plastic surgery, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, ENT, urology, ophthalmology, anesthesia, physiotherapy and psychiatry.  Apart from normal emergency duties, we are involved with patient admissions, provide neonatal, pediatric and adult code blue services for the hospital and tend to do almost all of our own fracture reductions and procedures.

In addition to participating in all aspects of patient care in the ER, you will also have an additional experience in the OR with one of our anesthetists to practice your airway skills in a controlled environment.  CCFP(EM) residents will also have the chance to do practice oral exams with Dr. Grushka.

Our emergency department is staffed by both UWO faculty and non faculty members who have either CCFP or CCFP(EM) certification.  We enjoy a good relationship with our community family physicians, specialists and major tertiary care center (LHSC).

The ER treats a wide variety of patients, similar to any larger emergency department. We insist on maintaining a one-to-one staff to resident ratio, which provides easy access to staff and an excellent learning opportunity that has been well received by previous residents.

Scheduling:  Can take 1-2 residents per 4 week rotation block.

Shifts: 14 shifts in the ER, 1 shift in the OR with a GP-Anesthetist.

PGY Level / Type of Rotation:  PGY 1, PGY 2, PGY 3 / Elective Rotation

PLEASE NOTE: ELECTIVES MUST BE FOUR WEEKS (1 MONTH) IN DURATION (PART OF A MONTH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE). ALL ELECTIVES LISTED BELOW AND ANY REQUESTS FOR ELECTIVES IN LONDON HOSPITALS ARE ARRANGED BY SHARON STORY, DEPT. OF FAMILY MEDICINE, WESTERN (WE HAVE A CITY-WIDE SCHEDULING COMMITTEE THAT DEALS WITH THE CORE AND ELECTIVE LONDON HOSPITAL ROTATIONS).
